Mary Dean Spencer

Mary Dean Spencer, 93, of Clemson, wife to the late H. Garth Spencer, passed away November 15, 2024.

Born in Franklin, TN, she was the daughter of the late Paul Wilkes and Frances Grooms Wilkes. Mary Dean received her bachelor’s degree from Carson-Newman College. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Clemson, where she taught Sunday School. Mrs. Spencer taught English as a Second Language for many years, was a member of the American Association of University Women and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed playing the piano and baking sourdough bread. Mary Dean was known throughout the community as The Bread Lady.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Dickey and husband, Clint of Central; son, Steve Spencer and wife, Tammy Lynn of Altamonte Springs, FL; brother, Frank Wilkes of Jacksonville, OR; grandchildren, Spencer Dickey and Jamie Lee Lau and husband, Ed; great-grandchild, Kai Sai Hung Lau.

A graveside service will be held at Old Stone Church Cemetery on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 9:00 a.m.

A celebration of life service will be held at the Corley Center at Clemson Downs on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Clemson Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1415, Clemson, SC 29633.
