Max DeFoy Thompson, 87, of Piedmont, husband of the late Joyce Harris Thompson, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2024. Born in Rutherfordton, NC, he was a son of the late Lizzie Blayock Ridings and William Votice (W.V.) Thompson. Max, along with his late wife, were the owners and builders of Custom-Built Homes. Max took extreme pride in his construction and built his wife’s dream home without blueprints, just based on his wife's vision. He could be found working in his dress loafers with a tiny pencil stuck behind his ear. Max also had rental investment properties and was referred to as the “Rent Man.”
A loving husband and father who took great care of his family, he was very protective of his two daughters. He also felt his daughters’ education was critical and valued so that they could have a great start in their careers. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Papa.” He had the house that everyone liked to hang out at and feel at home. Every summer, he and Joyce would chaperone a Myrtle Beach trip with his girls and their friends and let them cruise in his brand-new Cadillac. Making memories for all for years to come.
Max’s favorite lunch spot was Jim’s on Anderson Road, where he could always be found with a group eating together and sharing stories. Even though he was a man of few words, he had a dry sense of humor and could always make people laugh.
Max is survived by his two daughters, Katherine “K.T.” Matheson (Ed) and Tracy Behan; grandchildren, Kasey Fleming (Brianna) and Carlie Behan; great-grandchildren, Kolton and Kenji Fleming; and sister, Betty Cobb.
In addition to his wife of 53 years Max is preceded in death by a grandchild, Kellen Fleming, and great-grandchild, Korra Fleming; sisters Lillian Hines, Sulena Dickert, and Zula Greene, and brothers, Duran, Heyward, R.A., Lanier, Charles, Donald and Billy Thompson.
The family will be receiving friends on Sunday, October 20, 2024, from 11:00 AM until 1:30 PM at the family home. A private committal service will be held in the Chapel of Reflections Mausoleum.
Let us celebrate a well-lived life, and may his legacy carry on through the people who knew and loved him.
