Maxie Ruth Smith

Maxie Ruth Ausburn Smith, 85, of Powdersville, South Carolina, wife of the late Ray Carson Smith Sr., passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. 

Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Morene Ausburn. Maxie graduated from Easley High School and went on to Cecil Business School. She opened and operated Powdersville Bakery where she became Powdersville’s own Cake Lady. After closing the bakery, she worked in accounts payable for many years while maintaining her Cake Lady status. She made hundreds of wedding cakes and twice more birthday cakes. Maxie came from a loving, supportive, family. 

She is survived by her son, Carson Smith of Powdersville; two daughters, Carole Beckem (Matthew) of Aiken and Dawn Gilbert (Tim) of Greer; a sister, Elaine Duncan of Powdersville; grandchildren, Audrea Walters, John Gilbert, Casey and Adam Beckum; four Sisters in Law, Pat Ausburn, Becky Smith, and Catherine Smith, and Hilda Downey; a Brother in Law, Robert Phillips. In addition to these loved ones, she is survived by many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her husband and parents, she is predeceased by her sister Patsy who passed as a toddler, her brother Randall and his wife Grace, three additional brothers, Ralph, Charles and Edward, her sister, Sybil Philips. Additionally, Gerald and Grace Mingus, James Smith, Lewis Smith, Joe and Shirley Cambell and her nephew, Mike Smith. 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM on Friday, June 7, 2024 at Robinson Funeral Home – Powdersville. The funeral service will follow at 11: 45 AM in the Robinson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow the service in Siloam Baptist Church Cemetery.  

She is remembered as a mother that is a strong, resourceful woman. Her determination and hard work were appreciated. The family especially will remember lots of really good cake.
