Mendy Ann Mathena, 35, of 118 Henderson Road, went home to be with Jesus Saturday, September 20, 2008.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, a daughter of Linda Gail and Roy L., II, Mathena of the home, Mendy suffered a life long illness with a congenital heart defect and throughout her life she faced multiple surgeries and sickness.

At the age of 14 Mendy required three open heart surgeries to sustain her life and she faced death several times over the course of the year she was in the hospital. As a testament to her determination, desire to live, and strength that can come only from Jesus, she was able to meet these adversities head on and went on to graduate with Honors from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Master's degree in elementary education and English. Mendy loved to teach children and served at Siloam Christian School for a year and Southside Christian School for eight years. Mendy was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her parents,are her sister, Crystal Lynn Mathena of Easley; her maternal grandparents Maxwell and Edna Jones of Twymans Mill, Virginia. She is preceeded in death by her paternal grandparents, The Rev. Roy L. and Mary P. Mathena.

A celebration of Mendy's life will be at 3:00 p.m. Monday at Rock Springs Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. David Gallamore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The body is at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown and will be placed in the church at 1:00 p.m. Monday where the family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m., prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Rock Springs Baptist Church, 201 Rock Springs Road, Easley, SC 29642.

The family is at the residence.
