Mildred Clarke Hart, wife of the late Richard McDuffie Hart, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Morningside of Lancaster, South Carolina.
She was born in Canon, Georgia on June 25, 1919 to the late Addison Bowman and Maude McCarter Clarke. She is survived by her son, Richard M. Hart, Jr. (Janet) of Athens, AL; three daughters, Emily Jordan (Alan) of Lancaster, SC; Alicia Hinson (Jimmy) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and Melanie Jones (Jerome) of Lexington, SC. ; eight grandchildren, Chase and Jason Hart; Alison Jordan Garzon (John); Amy Jordan Ladd (Philip); Ashley Hinson DeMooney (Clayton); J. Clarke Hinson; Cameron and Mallory Jones; and four great-grandchildren, Alex and Aidan Garzon and Tatum and Mattie DeMooney , sisters-in-law Pat Hart of Easley, SC and Patsy Clarke of Raleigh, NC, and many nieces and nephews .
For 34 years Mildred taught many different subjects, coached basketball and tennis teams, directed plays, and prior to her retirement was the librarian at Hillcrest and Mauldin High Schools. She was a fifty-year plus member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary international society of outstanding women teachers.
She was a member of Mauldin United Methodist Church for over sixty years where she taught Sunday School classes from two year olds to adults and served in many leadership roles. She spent many hours organizing the church's archives and was a recipient of the Heritage Award.
Additionally Mildred was active in her community. She was Mauldin's first librarian, was instrumental in getting financing for the Langdon Cheves Library , and in 1978 the Golden Strip Civitans named her "Citizen of the Year" and the Lions and Rotary Clubs gave her this honor later. During her retirement years, she volunteered over 1000 hours with the Greenville County Adult Literacy Program.
A Committal Service will be held at ten o'clock on June 6, 2013 at Dacusville United Methodist Church followed by a memorial service at 2 o'clock at Mauldin United Methodist Church. A visitation at the church will follow the service.
