Mildred M. Stephens
- Seneca, SC
Mildred Elizabeth McDowell Stephens, 88, of 2235 Clearwater Point Drive, died Tuesday November 25, 2008 at the home of her daughter where she lived and was surrounded by love for the past 8 years.
She was born December 12, 1919 in Atlanta, Georgia, to John Leander McDowell and Bessie Lucinda Wells McDowell. She was of the Baptist faith, but was an associate member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, NC.
Millie retired from North Carolina Baptist Hospital where she was a Respiratory Therapist. Although she treasured her career as a respiratory therapist, her greater love was her role as wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and homemaker. She loved her children and their families with all her heart and treasured the time spent with her family, especially the grand and great-grandchildren. Hers was a complete life, one where love and joy were paramount. The beauty that she saw in each day is an attitude that will carry on with her family. She was the heart of our hearth with her culinary skills, sewing, crafts, gardening and canning. We will all miss her lively, loving nature and her signature red hair. We remember her not with sadness but with the joy of knowing she lived God's plan for her and is now with "Big Papa".
Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Warren "Bill" Stephens and a son, Warren Alexander "Al" Stephens.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Collins and her husband, Bart, of Kernersville, N.C., Sandy Brown, of Clemson, SC, and Suzi Westmoreland and her husband, Jim, of Seneca, SC ; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Karriker, of Winston-Salem, NC. She is also survived by younger siblings, sister, Geraldine Bowden, of Winder, Georgia ; brothers, Richard McDowell, of Columbus, Georgia and David McDowell, of Marietta, Georgia ; a special sister-in-law, Margaret Stephens Appleby, of Atlanta, Georgia and many, many nieces and nephews.
