Nancy Lee Dyer Witmer, 90, wife of John D Witmer and mother of four boys, Richard, Peter, John "Jack" and David Witmer, passed on to a better place on Thursday, September 12 at Clemson Downs Retirement Community.
Nancy was born in Framingham, Mass, the eldest of three daughters of George B. and Mildred Grant Dyer. Raised in Anisquam, she graduated from Framingham High School. She majored in design in the College of Home Economics at Syracuse University, graduating suma cum laude in 1951. In 1953, she married Syracuse classmate, John Witmer and joined him in a tiny apartment in New York City where he was studying law and international affairs.
Nancy worked as color consultant at the Madison Avenue firm of Maria Bergson Associates, traveling around the country on various design projects. She was a big support to John, helping him write his master's thesis. After he graduated and spent the required 2 years in the army, Nancy "retired" to become a full time homemaker. They lived in an apartment in Bloomfield, NJ and homes in Chatham and Mountainside, NJ from which John commuted to New York.
Nancy was a tireless and creative homemaker. She managed the boy's school lunches, helping with scouts, supporting sports teams and annual family camping trips. Nancy was also an active quilter and enjoyed crafts of all types. She created, repaired, reinvented and repurposed dozens of family treasures. Nancy greeted moves from NJ to IL and later to SC with energy and enthusiasm. With John's retirement and move south, Nancy enjoyed the peace and quiet of living on Lake Hartwell and later the caring community of Clemson Downs.
Nancy was preceded in passing by her son, Jack and her sister Betsy. Surviving family include her husband, John, son's Richard, Peter & David and her sister Judy.
