Laura Naomi Alexander Beard, wife of Claude Edwin Beard, died on August 11, 2009 in Fairfax, Virginia surrounded by her family.

Born on August 12, 1915 in Pickens, South Carolina, Mrs. Beard was a daughter of the late James Crenshaw and Nancy Licene Holden Alexander. She was a graduate of Pickens High School and retired, as a secretary, from Sangamo Electric Company following 25 years of service. A lifelong member of Grace United Methodist Church, Mrs. Beard was a member of the Harriett Mays Circle and an original member of the Adult Fellowship Class. She was also a member of the Pickens Women's Club and the Better Homes and Garden Club.

Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Claude Edwin Beard, of Pickens; two sons, Carey Lynn Beard and his wife, Lucy Hurt Beard, of Easley, David Lee Beard and his wife, Virginia Anne Taylor Beard, of Greenville; a daughter, Martha Katherine Beard Shayda and her husband, Paul Mark Shayda, of Fairfax, VA; six grandchildren, Mark Edwin Shayda and his wife, Katherine Stephens Shayda, David Bryan Shayda and his wife, Mandi Sue Watson Shayda, all of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Bailey Judson Beard of Greenville, SC, Carey Hall Beard and his wife, Koehler Cannon Beard, of Columbia, SC, Elisabeth Baron Beard Anders and her husband, Jason Bryan Anders of Lexington, SC, Laura Alexander Beard Allen and her husband, Gregory McCarthy Allen, of Arlington, VA and two great-grandchildren, Colton Chase Allen and Sullivan Sloan Allen.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Beard was predeceased by three sisters, Elizabeth Mae Alexander Brinson, Katherine Inez Alexander Wilhite, Martha Lois Alexander Long Cook; and five brothers, William Holden Alexander, Carl Romaine Alexander, James Carey Alexander, Arthur Thomas Alexander and William Edward Alexander.

The funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Grace United Methodist Church, Pickens, SC. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Pickens, SC. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 1:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Sunday prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be the grandsons and grandsons-in-law of Mrs. Beard. Honorary Escort will be the Adult Fellowship Class.
