Nathan S. Newton, Sr., of 105 Willow Place, died Monday, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pickens County on December 23, 1915, Nathan was the tenth of fourteen children of Doc and Alma Nalley Newton. When he entered into eternal rest at the age of 92, he was the oldest living member of Trinity Wesleyan Church.

In his early years, Mr. Newton and his brothers were responsible for much of the fine stone masonry found in such places as the upstate parks of South Carolina and the Chapel at Duke University. He also served as a supervisor for the Civilian Conservation Corps. Mr. Newton worked with the railroad during WWII. After working with his brothers in the furniture business in Burlington, NC, he and his family moved back to South Carolina where he opened Clemson Furniture Company. He later became involved in the development, construction, and leasing of shopping centers throughout the southeast. He was the owner of Newton Real Estate and Development Company in Easley.

Mr. Newton is survived by a son, Dr. N.S. Newton, Jr. and wife, Janis, of Mount Pleasant; a daughter, Glenda Simister of Greenville; a sister, Faith Hobson of Tuscaloosa, AL; a brother, Tim Newton of Fayetteville, NC; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many more loved ones.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, February 24 at Trinity Wesleyan Church. The family will receive friends before and after the service at the church, with a private graveside interment to follow.

Mr. Newton was a benevolent benefactor to many during his life-time. His wishes were for any memorial contributions to be made to Trinity Wesleyan Church, 700 Isaqueena Trail, Central, SC 29630, (864)654-6000.
