Neil George Vander Linden

November 7, 1940 — April 3, 2016

Neil George Vander Linden, son of the late George Mathias Vander Linden and Henrietta Gladys Johnson Vander Linden, died April 3, 2016.



He was born and grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and Appleton High School. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin and received a PhD in paper Chemistry from Lawrence University. He studied on a Fulbright scholarship at the Institute of Technology in Monterrey, Mexico and served in the Peace Corps in Bolivia for three years where he taught English, Inorganic Chemistry and Electro-Chemistry at the Universidad Popular Tupaj Katari and the Universidad de San Andrea in La Paz.



Mr. Vander Linden was technical manager for Mead Westvaco in Charleston for 30 years, retiring in 2003. He was president of the Georgia Tech Pulp and Paper Foundation, selected as TAPPI Fellow in 1992, served on the TAPPI board of directors and was a member of the Anderson District Volunteers in Missions.



He was a poet, a photographer and loved to travel. In addition, he was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and a proud owner of the a “piece of the turf.”



Surviving are his wife, Alice Hendricks Vander Linden; daughter, Cynthia Vander Linden Beard (Robert) of Harleyville, SC; son Peter Ramins of Charleston, SC; grandson, Jason Loomis of Afghanistan; granddaughter, Elena Loomis of Harleyville, SC; stepsons, Les Hendricks of Easley, SC, Tommy Hendricks (April) of Easley, SC; stepdaughter, Molly West (William) of Rock Hill, SC; nephew, Gary Gottschalk (Mimi); nieces, Denise Meyers (Jim) and Michelle Joosten (Ron), all of Appleton, Wisconsin; and grandchildren, Sarah Hendricks, Olivia Hendricks, Connor Hendricks, Brynnan Hendricks, Alex Hendricks, Charlotte Hendricks, Thomas Hendricks, Chandler West, and Griffin West.



He was predeceased by his wife, Jane Brous Vander Linden, two sisters, Pat Gottschalk of Appleton, Wisconsin and Phyllis Froehlich of Charleston, SC, and a niece, Cheryl Gottschalk of Appleton, Wisconsin.



Memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 6th at 2:30 PM at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Rodney Powell and Rev. Paul M. Kennett officiating.



Family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:15 PM at the church prior to the service.



In lieu of flowers, family has requested memorials be made directly to the Vander Linden Mission Scholarship Fund at First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 589, Easley, SC 29641.
