Nelle H. Evans

Nelle Holden Evans, 96, went to her eternal home on November 11, 2008.
Born in Pickens County on February 28, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Ernest C. and Euna Mae George Holden and the wife of the late Warren W. Evans.
She was a graduate of Six Mile High School, attended Spartanburg Methodist College and received her BA degree from Central Wesleyan College.
She taught school in Pickens and Oconee County schools for 30 years. Teaching children was one of her greatest loves and enjoyment. She was a former member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.
She was the oldest member of Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church. She loved her church and served in many capacities of the church. She wrote the first history of the church in book form. She also wrote poetry and was honored to have the fellowship hall named in her honor.
She traveled extensively and made many friends during her life and travels. She dearly loved people and was a friend to all she met.
She is survived by a daughter, Janice (Jan) and husband A.C. (Sonny) Whitten, two sons, John and wife Ruth, Dan and wife Doris, five grandchildren, Tim Whitten and wife Jeanie, Barry Whitten and wife Rhonda, Lori Whitten Wilbanks and husband Jamie, Sherrie Evans Durham and husband Daniel, Michelle Evans Craven and husband Bruce; six great-grandchildren Kathryn and John Whitten, Justin Wilbanks, Andrew and Alex Durham and Evan and Holden Craven.
She is survived by a brother Ralph Holden and his wife Aileen of Clemson, a sister-in-law Margaret Evans Stewart of Easley and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Max Evans, a sister and four brothers.
Funeral services will be 11 AM, Friday at Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM, Thursday at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home.
