Nicasio P. Marullo

April 13, 1930 — January 31, 2010

Dr. Nicasio P. Marullo, PhD
Seneca, SC

After a short, but courageous battle with lung cancer, Nick, a resident of Seneca and Clemson, SC, passed away surrounded by family at his daughter's home in Greer, SC.

Nick was born to Sicilian immigrants, Gerlando and Giuseppina Marullo in Brooklyn, NY. Coming from humble beginnings, Nick was most proud of his 1948 graduation from Grover Cleveland High School in the City of NY. Nick would go on to much greater heights within the world of higher education graduating from Queens College of the City of NY in 1952 and the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1961 followed by a prestigious post-doctoral appointment to California Tech. Dr. Marullo continued his passion for research and educating at Clemson College in 1961 as assistant professor of chemistry. In 1969, he received the National Science Foundation Fellowship Award and continued research at Princeton University, UCLA and the University of Strasbourg, France while remaining a full professor at Clemson University. Dr. Marullo's ground breaking research in stereochemistry would begin a long relationship as a contributing research scientist culminating in the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Cram/Lehn/and Pederson for synthesizing artificial molecules whose shapes mimicked those occurring biologically. Chemists could now reproduce life's selection processes. Dr. Marullo continued research with the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Army and NASA until his retirement in 1995. Nick was a tireless researcher, a master educator, a loyal husband, a proud father, and most of all a beaming Grandfather.

Nick is predeceased by his brother, Angelo, sister, Rose, first wife and mother of their four children, Margaret Schmidt; his second wife, Virginia Cadaret, beloved son, Stephen and best friend, Frank Mendyk.

Nick is survived by his eldest son, Jerry Marullo and wife Amanda; daughter Joanne Heijjer and husband Raymond, youngest son Billy Marullo and wife Mitzi; Grandchildren Megan, Cole, Christopher, Sophia, Stephen, Jonathan, Gianna, and Gisella; his nephew Angelo Leto; niece Joanne Quarltere, and his first cousin's wife, Linda Alletto.
