Nyal Dwight Camper, 71, of 206 Holden Drive, passed away on June 16, 2010 at Oconee Medical Center.
Born May 12, 1939, Dwight was a native of Forest, VA and the son of the late Herbert Nyal and Grace Leedy Camper. Dwight attended Louisburg College in Virginia and received his B.S. in Chemistry and his Ph.D. degree in Crop Science with an emphasis on plant physiology and biochemistry from North Carolina State in Raleigh. In his 43 years as a professor at Clemson University, his teaching activities encompassed courses for graduate and undergraduate students including an honors course in "Plants in Medicine, Magic and Murder." Under his mentorship, he had more than 50 students who completed master and doctoral degrees. He was an active member of the South Carolina Academy of Science, serving as president for two terms, Sigma Xi, and other scientific organizations. He was awarded the "Cutting Edge" endowment professorship by the SC Commission of Higher Education. This award recognizes a professor whose work embodies outstanding scholarship through research, teaching and service. He received the Godley-Snell Award for Excellence in Agricultural Research. Dwight also served as the Clemson University Marshall in 2002-2003. As an active member of the First Baptist Church of Clemson, Dwight served on many committees and as a deacon.
Dwight is survived by his wife, Jane Bratton Camper of the home; daughters, Shea Mayberry (Brandon) of Dana Point, CA and Britney Barnes (Tom) and grandchildren, Aiden and Sofee of Greenville, SC.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Clemson on Sunday, June 20th at 3:00 PM. Following the service the family will receive friends in the Family Life Center.
