Mrs. Pauline "Polly" Burgess Barnes, 92, widow of Garnet Andrew Barnes, passed into eternal rest on November 16, 2016 at Foothills Retirement Community.
Polly was born in Pickens County on September 26, 1924 to the late Clinton and Emma Aiken Burgess. She graduated from Easley High School in 1942 and earned a BS degree from Winthrop College in 1945. Polly married her high school sweetheart on December 22, 1945. They shared 67 years together. After college, Mrs. Barnes began her thirty year teaching career, most of which was spent in Pickens County at Easley Junior High School as a math teacher. She enjoyed being a member of the Home Extension Club and Women's Missionary Union. Other interests included travel, pottery, knitting, and decorating cakes for family birthdays. Mrs. Barnes has been a member of First Baptist Church of Easley for 71 years and was a faithful member of the Philethea class.
Mrs. Barnes is survived by maternal nephews William "Freedie" L. Freeman, III (Carolyn) and Michael C. Freeman (Davina). She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Polly was predeceased by her sister, Louise Burgess Freeman and brother-in-law Reverend William L. Freeman, Jr. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
The family would like to thank the Foothills Retirement Community and Lutheran Hospice for their special care, compassion, and attention during Mrs. Barnes last months.
The Funeral Service will take place in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home - Powdersville Road, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley, SC 29642 on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Dr. John Adams and Clint Freeman officiating.
Visitation of family and friends will be from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM prior to the service at the Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Roddey Gettys, Rex Barnes, Jr., Carter Brumfield, Brandon Carter, Jeremy Foster and Jesse Livingston.
Honorary Escorts will be the Going on Lunch Group and the Philethea Sunday School Class.
The family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Easley "For Generations to Come", 300 E 1st Ave, Easley, SC 29640.
