Pennie Sue Smith, 74, died peacefully on January 28, 2024 at Lila Doyle Nursing Home in Seneca, SC. She was born on December 3, 1949, in Missoula, Montana, to parents Lenore and Robert P. Palmer II. Pennie was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt.
Pennie was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Jim Armstrong. She is survived by her children, Jenny (Dewey) Johns of Nahunta, GA, and Gavin (Brenda) Smith of Seneca, SC; three sisters, Perrie Kay (Ed) Avery of Cheyenne, WY, Lesalie (Doug) Franzen of Marysville, WA, and Cindy Armstrong of Glenrock, WY; one brother, Robert P. (Carol) Palmer III of Gillette, WY; grandchildren, Trevor (Lauren) Finley, Julia Stephens, Avery Smith and Bennett Smith; and great grandson Crew Finley, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pennie graduated from Powell High School in Wyoming in 1968. She attended Northwest College for one year and went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from Clemson University in 1975. She dedicated many years of her life as a Special Education teacher at Pendleton High School. She was passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of her students.
Pennie found solace and community at Bethel United Methodist Church in Iva, SC. She cherished her time spent worshiping and connecting with others there.
In her free time, Pennie was an avid reader. She found joy and inspiration in the pages of countless books.
A celebration of Pennie's life is planned for Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 2 pm, at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, 108 Cross Creek Road in Central, SC. Cremation has already taken place under the care of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations to The American Brain Foundation, Special Olympics, or ALS Association be made in Pennie’s memory.
Pennie Sue Smith will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. May her memory live on in the hearts of those she touched. She will be enjoying the flowers and butterflies that she loved.
