Wayne Weaver, age 92, passed away Monday, March 4, 2024, in Greenville.

Born in Darlington, SC on September 11, 1931, he was a son of the late Horace Wayne Weaver and Annie Mae Inman Weaver. Mr. Weaver graduated from St. Johns High School in 1949 and The Citadel in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. He was a member of the Summerall Guards and a member of Company B and Company E.

In 1953, he was called to active duty and assigned to an artillery company in the US Army. He served in Karlsruhe Germany for 1 year until his honorable discharge as a 1st Lieutenant in 1955. Mr. Weaver attended the Wharton School’s MBA program at University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1956.

Mr. Weaver and his wife Anne were married on June 22, 1957.

Mr. Weaver began his business career in 1956 as a CPA/Senior Auditor with S D Leidesdorf & Company, which eventually became Ernst & Young. In 1960 he became controller at Ross Builders before being hired by Furman University in 1965 as its business manager. He left in 1971 to become treasurer of Hoechst A.G. of West Germany’s Spartanburg operation for 1 year before returning to Furman University in 1972 as its Vice President of Business Affairs. He remained in that position until his retirement in 1994. During his almost 30 years with Furman, his achievements of which Furman was most proud included a beautiful, functional, and well-maintained campus; an endowment that had grown many fold and was managed with expert guidance; financial stability with balanced budgets; virtually no debt; and enlightened personnel programs.

As a member of First Baptist Church in Greenville since 1965, he served as a deacon and a Chairman of the Finance, Missions, and Faith Fund Trust Committees. He was also active in the community serving on the local boards of American Red Cross, Goodwill, Greenville County Redevelopment Authority, and BB&T among others.

Surviving are his children; daughter, Maryanne Weaver Earle of Greenville, SC; and son, David Wayne Weaver (Elizabeth) of Easley, SC; and three grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Weaver, Benton McNeill Stilwell, and James Raleigh Weaver.

He was predeceased by his wife, his half-brother Hugh Stokes Sprott, his sister Elizabeth (Libby) Weaver Gosnell, and his brother, George Edward Weaver.

Funeral services will be held graveside at 2 PM Tuesday, March 12, 2024 in Springwood Cemetery, located at 401 N. Main St, Greenville. Kyle Matthews, a pastor of First Baptist Greenville, will be officiating. 

The family will receive friends after the service.
