Anderson, SC

Rebecca Anne “Becky” Cumbie Haynes, 79, wife of Herman Edwin “Eddie” Haynes passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Becky was a daughter of the late Alton B. Cumbie, Jr. and Anne Duckett Cumbie. She was a 1964 graduate of D.W. Daniel High School where she was a star basketball player. She graduated from Western Carolina University with a degree in Health and PE and earned her Masters Degree in math also from Western Carolina. Her time at WCU brought her to the love of her life, Eddie Haynes, who also shared her love of sports. Becky taught for over 30 years, coached basketball, and substituted for many years following her retirement (Waynesville Middle School in Waynesville, NC and Riverbend Middle School in Conover, NC). Eddie coached baseball, softball, and basketball and Becky was right beside him cheering him and her kids on. Her love of sports led her to compete in running events with Eddie long before running was cool. Their children also shared this love as Eddie and Becky would always be seen watching their son and daughter playing in all of their various sports and later coaching these sports. In her retirement, they would travel wherever their grandchildren were playing to watch whatever sport they were playing. This was her greatest joy, watching Luke, Owen, and Maddie play the sports they loved. Becky and Eddie always had a bag packed for their next adventure. They were “super fans” of all sports and were always together, but basketball was Becky’s personal favorite. She also enjoyed cheering on her son-in-law as he currently coaches for the Tennessee Vols. Occasionally, she might even take a few notes. Up until she took her last breath, she was streaming and cheering her grandson on in his recent basketball game. Her legacy is strong and will live on through her family members who will never forget her dedication and love for each one of them.

Becky was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Central and was a former member of Clyde Central UMC in Clyde, NC, where she and Eddie lived for many years and was active in her circle group. She also lived for many years in Hickory, NC where she found great joy being near her son, daughter, and grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to her husband of over 58 years, are her son, Kelland Edwin “Kelly” Haynes of Greenville, SC and daughter-in-law Angie Carpenter of Hickory, NC; daughter, Christy Haynes Lentz and son-in-law Bryan of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren, Maddie Carpenter, Luke Lentz and Owen Lentz; brother, Alton B. Cumbie, III and his wife, Susan of Walhalla, SC; sister, Johnnie Cumbie Walker and her husband, Doug of Clemson; sister-in-law, Debbie Cumbie Cooler, and many nieces and nephews and cousins that loved her dearly.
