Rebecca B. Slone

December 14, 1920 — October 17, 2016

Rebecca Broyles Douthit SloneHartsville, SC

Rebecca B. Douthit Slone, widow of Allen R Slone, MD, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 17, 2016, at her home in Hartsville, SC.  Becky was born on December 14, 1920 in Anderson County, SC on her father’s farm, Seedland Farm.  She was the only  child of the late Joseph B and Mary B Douthit.

She attended Lebanon School and graduated from Anderson Girl’s High in Anderson, SC in 1938 and from Winthrop College in 1942 with a degree in Mathematics.  She taught school in Belton, SC and Greenwood, SC.  After teaching for 3 years she was an American Red Cross recreation worker for the veterans in Tennessee and South Carolina.  During her school years she traveled to school first in a one horse covered wagon made by her father, then drove an automobile to Anderson, and finally took the train to Winthrop.

After attending Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanstan, Illinois, she began working at Bethel Methodist Church in Spartanburg, SC, as the Director of Christian Education.  During her 2 years at Bethel, she met her future husband, Allen R Slone.  She and Allen married June 7, 1948.  They had 4 children, lived in Charleston, Florence, and Hartsville, SC.  She and Allen were married for 60 years.

Becky was always very active in her church.  She was a member of St Luke United Methodist Church in Hartsville.  She volunteered her time to teach Sunday School, serve on church boards and committees, and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

She loved to read, work crossword puzzles, and play on her computer, but one of her greatest loves was for gardening and taking care of her plants.  You can take the girl off the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the girl!  She was a life-long avid Clemson fan and wore her orange and purple proudly. (She was even known to help pull the tigers through on occasion, most recently the Clemson/N C State game this past Saturday!)

Surviving are her three children Susan Douthit Slone of Denver, NC; Mary Louise Slone Finklea of Florence, SC; and John Allen Slone and his wife, Linda, of Rock Hill, SC.  She was preceeded in death by her eldest daughter, Rebecca Douthit Slone Hogan.  She is also survived by four grandchildren, Joseph Benjamin Finklea and Thomas Alan Finklea and his wife Emily of Florence, SC;  Travis Allen Slone of Rock Hill, SC., and Lainey Nicole Slone of Plano, TX.  One of the greatest joys she had during the last 17 months was the time she spent with her only great grandchild, Jacqueline Claire Finklea.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, October 19, 2016, in Anderson County at the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery.  The family requests memorials be sent to the Epworth Children’s Home, PO Box 50466, Columbia, SC  29250 in lieu of flowers.

Condolences may be expressed online at www.robinsonfuneralhomes.com or at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central, SC.
