Rev. EJ Massengale, 84, of Powdersville, South Carolina, husband of the late Vella Phillips Massengale, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 13, 2024.
Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, a son of the late Emmitt Massengale, Sr. and Dicy Phillips Massengale. For over six decades, Rev. Massengale served as an independent pastor, touching the lives of countless individuals through his ministry. He was the founding pastor of New Life Worship Center in Greenville, South Carolina, and remained its devoted shepherd until his final days. Under his guidance and leadership, the church thrived and became a beacon of hope and spiritual nourishment for the community. Rev. Massengale was known not only for his dedication to God but also for his unwavering commitment to his family. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who always put his faith and loved ones first. His devotion to his family was evident in every aspect of his life. Outside of his pastoral duties, Rev. Massengale found solace and joy in fishing. Whether it was a quiet afternoon by the lake or a fishing trip with friends and family. In both his personal and professional life, Rev. Massengale embodied simplicity and genuine love for others. His calm demeanor and kind-heartedness touched the hearts of all who knew him. From speaking comforting words at funerals to leading congregations in prayer during times of strife, he exemplified what it meant to be a compassionate servant of God.
He is survived by two sons, Steve Massengale (Marla), and Timothy Massengale (Tina); a daughter, Melinda Massengale Cooper (Tim “Coop”); eleven grandchildren, Jesse Hargrove, Amanda Massengale, Aaron Massengale, Reece Odom, Jordan Atkins, Brandon Oberle, Tyler Cooper, Neal Cooper, Jayce Kay, Lindy Hendrickson, and Ryan Miller; and a multitude of great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by four siblings, Edward Massengale, Emmitt Massengale, Jr., Mae Phillips, and Jurline Martin.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 16, 2024, from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM at New Life Worship Center, 2825 Anderson Road, Greenville, South Carolina, 29611. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM in the Church Sanctuary. Burial will follow the service in Robinson Memorial Gardens.
