Brigadier General Richard Allen Culbreath South Carolina National Guard (Retired), loving husband, dedicated father, and esteemed community member, passed away on June 7, 2024. Born on September 29, 1929, in McCormick, SC, to the late Butler Strom and Ailene Culbreath.
Richard was known for his warm and caring personality, as well as his gardening, keeping his yard in pristine condition. Yardwork allowed him to catch up with neighbors and members of the community, all hoping to hear one of his many amazing stories or glean a piece of indispensable advice.
He retired as Plant Manager at Milliken Textile after 43 years of hard work and dedication. His excellence shone through in every aspect of his life. Former employees have fond memories of working with Richard.
In addition to his professional achievements, Richard found great fulfillment in his education. He obtained a Bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina, further underscoring his dedication to personal growth and development. Richard was a proud Gamecock fan!
Richard also served his country with honor, working in the South Carolina National Guard, retiring as a Brigadier General after 35 years. He began in McCormick County, and he rose through the ranks to South Carolina National Guard Inspector General. During his career he was the Battalion Commander of the 122nd Engineer Battalion in Edgefield, SC. Richard received the Meritorious Service Medal and was a recipient of the Palmetto Military Academy Hall of Fame honor roll among many other honors. His commitment to protecting and serving others extended beyond his military service into various aspects of community involvement.
Among Richard's proudest accomplishments were his family, faith, and service. Richard served proudly as a Deacon and the Chairman of the Deacons at East Clemson Baptist Church. He taught Sunday School, was a member of the choir, and volunteered for numerous roles serving the church. Richard served as the Lions Club President and various other positions within the organization. He could be seen selling brooms at festivals, volunteering selling tickets at Daniel High School football games, and selling candy to raise funds for those less fortunate.
Survived by his sons Rick Culbreath (Lynn), Pete Culbreath (Pauline), Keith Culbreath (Susan), and Matt Culbreath (Ellen); Grandchildren, Jamie Culbreath (Brianne), Will Culbreath (Beth), Katie Halley (Ian), Megan Applegate (Dylan), Sarah Guy (Tanner) and eleven great grandchildren. Richard leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will continue to inspire all those who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Zettie Chapman Culbreath; Brother, Thomas Culbreath (Dorothy); daughter in-law, Susan Perry Culbreath; grandchildren, John Culbreath and Jeff Adcox; great grandchildren Preston William Culbreath and Andrew Edmonds.
The family is grateful for the kindness, support and loving care Richard (Pop) received at Dominion Senior Living.
Visitation will be at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home starting at 10:30 am. Funeral service will follow visitation starting at 11:30 am.
