Richard Harold “Dick” DeShields, Jr, age 91, of Easley, and husband of Sandra DeShields passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024.
Born in Greenville, Dick was the son of the late Richard Harold and Mattie Elizabeth DeShields. He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Vera Lee Mullikin DeShields, his sister, Dorothy Ballew and one grandchild, John Thomas Rice.
Dick graduated from Greenville High then Furman University with a degree in Biology and Economics with a minor in Psychology. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the Military Armored Division at Fort Knox. He founded DeShields Trucking Company in 1969 with his father and worked there until February of this year. Previously he was the national sales manager for Wunda Weve Carpet. He served as an Elder at Reedy River Presbyterian Church and was currently a member at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Dick was a people person. He loved meeting new people and entertaining. He had an insatiable curiosity for learning and encouraged everyone around him. He also loved a good laugh, and his family members were often the recipients of his latest prank.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, Deborah Rice of Simpsonville, Dorina DeShields of Roswell, GA, Harold (Janet) DeShields of Piedmont, David (Daphne) DeShields of Greenville, Brian (Jes) DeShields of Taylors, two stepdaughters Cindy (Brad) Jones of Cumming, GA and Karen Wrigley of Easley, SC. He has been blessed with 14 grandchildren, Jason Rice, Courtney Huckaby, Tyler DeShields, Chris DeShields, Leanne Woodworth, Victoria Gomez, Audrey Williams, Michael DeShields, Kaitlyn Horner, Alyssa Bennett, Emily Kothe, Madi Williams, and step grandchildren Stuart Jones, Brent Jones and Alexandra Wrigley. Dick also had 17 great grandchildren with 3 more on the way.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 15, 2024 from 12:00 PM until 1:45 at Robinson Funeral Home - Powdersville Road. Funeral services will follow the visitation in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 PM. A private burial will be held at Graceland West Cemetery.
The family will be at their respective homes.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
The family would like to thank some very special caregivers for their love and care of Mr. DeShields; his personal sitters, Raymond Bryant and Kelly Williams; Oakview Park Assisted Living’s staff and especially KiKi Lois, Tammy Johnson and Grace Wright, and Gentiva Hospice’s nurses, Elizabeth Rogers and Beth Banks.
