Robert Erland Ashbury, Jr., 81, of 409 Perry Hill Road, died Monday, June 4, 2007 at St. Francis Downtown in Greenville.
Born in Detroit, MI, he was the only child of the late Robert Erland Ashbury, Sr. and Evelyn Haycock Ashbury. He was a veteran of the US Army, a graduate of Denison University in Granville, Ohio and was retired as a Vice-President of AXA Equitable. Mr. Ashbury was a former member of Georges Creek Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday School teacher, and in many other leadership roles. He was currently a member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church where he was actively involved in the Happy Hearts Senior Group, an usher and president of his Sunday School class. In his early retirement years, he was an active volunteer at St. Francis Hospital and United Christian Ministries. Mr. Ashbury participated in the water aerobics class at the Pickens YMCA until the week of his hospitalization. His favorite role was being Dad, Uncle Bob, & Papa Bob and spending time with his family and friends.
Surviving are three sons, Robert Ashbury, III of Grosse Point, MI, John Ashbury (Peggie) of Mendon, MI, Paul Ashbury (Anne) of Paterson, NJ; six grandchildren, Ayslyn Miller, Jim Ashbury, Libby and Ian Ashbury, Zachary and Sam Ashbury; special brothers-in-law, Jack Miller (Marion) of Taylors, Harry Craig of Greenville; special nieces, Jeanean Beeco (Ray) of Easley, Carol Simmons (Johnny) of Greer, Ruth Pingali (Keshav) of Austin, TX; great-nephews, Nicholas (Christina) and Adam (Rebekah) Beeco; great-niece, Sandy Pingali; extended family, Lynn Knox, Eric and Kristen Batson, Ford, Evan, Caroline, and Emilee Batson; and special friend Jean K. Brown. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Judith Doris Miller Ashbury.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday at Hampton Heights Baptist Church with Reverends David Case and Allen Smith officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in Georges Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
The body is at Robinson Funeral Home - Downtown, Easley where the family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:00 until 8:00 PM and will be placed in the church at 1:00 PM on Friday.
