Robert "Bob" L. Viele, 93, husband of Mary Julia Cauldwell Viele, of Easley, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2026.
Born in Springfield, IL, he was the son of the late Fred and Ann Grinn Viele.
Bob retired after 27 years as an architect at the Naval Base in Charleston, SC and was a member of Overbrook Gospel Chapel in Greenville, SC. He also proudly served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Bob was an accomplished architect who, early in his career, worked in downtown Chicago and helped design several skyscrapers. He later spent many years designing buildings for the federal government and military. He took great inspiration from the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and carried a lifelong appreciation for architecture and design. Bob was also a talented artist who beautifully and uniquely portrayed structures, nature, and human life in his many paintings and sketches. His artwork remains cherished by his family and can still be found throughout the homes of his children and grandchildren. He also found great joy in sailing. Beyond his many talents and interests, Bob was a deeply humble and generous man who never felt the need to take more than he needed. Even when he had earned or was entitled to something, he would often choose to forgo it so that someone else could benefit.
In addition to his loving wife of 70 years, Bob is survived by a daughter, Mary Baur (Chris) of Anderson; a son, Robert "Rob" Viele, Jr. of Lake Linden, MI; grandchildren, Christopher N. Baur, Cary A. Baur (Sakthi), Amanda Ruparelia, Benjamin Grillo, Caleb Grillo, Jody Ann Viele, Jodi Michelle Dazzo, Adam Viele, Eric Viele, David Viele, and Brian Viele; and 21 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Grillo; a son, Joseph Viele; and a granddaughter-in-law, Francisca Isabel Baur.
