Robert J. Frankovich, 92, passed away surrounded by his family at his home early Monday morning, June 17, 2019. He was born in Manistique, MI on May 2, 1927, the son of George J and Alice M (Demars) Frankovich, the fourth child of nine. In May 1944, Bob dropped out of high school to enlist in the US Navy. He served in the Pacific campaigns during World War II and in Japan during the occupation. In June 1946, he was Honorably Discharged from the US Navy. In January 1947, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp which later became the US Air Force. He served in the Korean War with the 3201st Boat Squadron performing sea rescues of downed aircrews. Bob met Mary Ann Golt in Dover, DE and they were married on January 21, 1950. He retired from the US Air Force as a Technical Sergeant in 1966 with 22 years of military service. He worked for National Airlines in Charleston, SC and Pan American Airlines in Los Angeles, CA until retiring in 1981. Bob and Mary Ann returned to Central, SC while building a house in Six Mile. They have lived in Six Mile since 1992. Bob was active in the local woodworkers group for many years and enjoyed making wooden toys. He also became active in the AAF/USAF Crash Rescue Association which was associated with the crash boats he served on in Korea. Bob served as a past president of the association for many years. Bob has enjoyed life traveling with Mary Ann, doing wood working, and reminiscing with his service buddies.
Bob is survived by his wife Mary Ann of Six Mile, SC, one daughter Ann (David Vaughn) of Central, SC; three sons Robert of Summerville, SC, Joseph of Newnan, GA, and Daniel of Piedmont, SC; six grandchildren, Keri Cantrell, Mallary Vaughn, Devan Vaughn, Layna Frankovich, Lydia Frankovich and Michelle Bates (Todd); one great grandchild Caleb Cantrell; and one sister Rose Marie Cournaya. He was predeceased by his parents and 7 siblings.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 AM on Friday, June 28 at the MJ Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson, SC. The family will receive family and friends after the service at the Holiday Inn Express in Clemson, SC with food and drinks.
