Robert Elbert Hester, Sr., 84, of 214 Cheyenne Trail, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, GA.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late William Breckenridge and Virginia Ariail Hester, Mr. Hester retired as a self-employed brick mason and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the US Army and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Cassell Hester of Liberty; two sons, Robert E. Hester, Jr., of Greer, and Harold Hester of Easley; three daughters, Paulette McAlister of Easley, Joan DeRossett of Greenville and Jean Crook of Simpsonville; two sisters, Ruth White of Woodruff and Virginia Hallman of Rock Hill; two step-sons, Martin Whitaker and Michael Whitaker, both of Pickens, a step-daughter, Rebecca Sargent of Liberty; eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hester was predeceased by a brother, Bill Hester, and by two sisters, Sally Boykin and Ina Bartlett.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown with Rev. Barry Rackley and Rev. Leon Porter officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
