Robert Lee Layfield, 81, of Easley, passed away Monday, February 13, 2012 following an extended illness.

Born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, Mr. Layfield was a son of the late Austin L. and Lillie Gay Snyder Layfield. He was a graduate of Washington Irving High School, Clarksburg, WV. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force during the Korean War. After graduating from Fairmont State University, Fairmont, WV, with a B. S. Degree in Physics, he received a US Atomic Energy Commission Fellowship and attended the University of Rochester, NY and the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, NY. He was an employee of the US Atomic Energy Commission in the Washington, DC area and retired from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Bethesda, MD.

Mr. Layfield was a member of Easley Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder and Trustee, and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He served as a devoted volunteer at the Baptist Easley Hospital for many years, and was a member and past president of the Easley Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ellen Radebaugh Layfield, of the Foothills Retirement Community; a son, James R. Layfield (Kathryn); two grandchildren, Matthew Layfield and Jessica Layfield all of Katy, TX; a brother-in-law, Fred Radebaugh of Taylors, SC; and four nephews.

Mr. Layfield was predeceased by a sister, Betty Layfield.

Funeral services will be 1:30 PM, Thursday, February 16, 2012 in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road with the Reverend Dr. Bill Seel officiating.

Visitation will follow the service at the funeral home.
