Mr. Robert H. Mason, 85, widower of Frances Carey Mason, died Thursday, September 18, 2008 at his residence. Born in Jonesville, SC and reared in Pacolet Mills, SC, Mr. Mason was the son of the late Bryant L. Mason, Sr. and Ruby Horne Mason. He was a graduate of Pacolet High School and Clemson College. He received the Masters Degree in Education from Appalachian State Teachers College and did graduate work at the University of South Carolina.
Mr. Mason was a veteran of World War II, having served with the Army Air Force in India. He was a member of the U. S. Air Force Reserve from 1946-1949.
Mr. Mason taught Vocational Agriculture at Jonesville High School and served as Elementary School Principal in Pacolet Mills, Cheraw and York. He retired from the S. C. State Dept. of Education after serving 22 years as Area Supervisor of School Bus Transportation in the Pee Dee Area of S.C. He was a long time resident of Chesterfield, S.C.
Mr. Mason was a member of Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church, Central, S.C. where he served as a lay reader, served many years on the Board of Trustees and the Cemetery Committee. He was a long time member of the church choir. He was a member of Clemson University and Appalachian State University Alumni Associations, Phi Delta Kappa, S.C. State Employees Association, China-Burma-India Veterans Association, American Legion, and the Old Pendleton Chapter of the S.C. Genealogical Society.
Surviving are a daughter, Catherine Maria Mason of Arden, N.C. and a brother, William E. Mason of Lodi, CA. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Martha Ann Mason and a brother, Bryant L. Mason, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church on Sunday at 3pm
with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall following the service.
