Robert Samuel McCorkle, born June 17, 1946, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.
Bob attended North Georgia College, where he earned his degree before being commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army in 1968. He served his country with distinction, including assignments in Germany, Vietnam, and Fort Hood, TX. Over the course of his military career, he was with headquarters 2d Squadron 14th Armored Cavalry; tank company commander with the 67th Armored Division; troop commander and operations officer with the 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment.
Following his time in the Army, Bob began a second career as a Special Agent with the FBI. After training in Quantico, Virginia, he and his family transferred to Toledo, Ohio, where he served for 22 years. He retired in November 2001.
In retirement, Bob and his wife, Dee “Dorothy” (Salemme) McCorkle, fulfilled his dream of sailing, spending several years living aboard their sailboat, “Skate,” and traveling along the East Coast. In later years, they moved to Easley, South Carolina, where they enjoyed being close to family.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Dee, and their two sons, Robert (Tina) McCorkle and Matthew (Kristin) McCorkle. He was a proud grandfather to Bradley (Savannah), Nicholas, Courtney, Ryan, and Kayla. He is also survived by his sisters, Linda (Richard) Hurst and Margaret “Marge” (Tony) Salemme. He was preceded in death by his parents, Major Robert W. McCorkle (Ret.) and Lois E. McCorkle of Lakeland, FL.
Bob will be remembered for his dedication to his country, his commitment to his family, and his adventurous spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and enduring strength.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:45 AM on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Robinson Funeral Home – Powdersville Road. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home - Powdersville Road. Burial will follow in M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
