Ruby Jean Berryhill, 1933-2018
With great sadness, the Berryhill family announces the death of their cherished and indomitable sister and aunt, Ruby Jean Berryhill.
Ruby Jean Berryhill was born on Feb 6, 1933 in Easley, SC, the fifth of nine children of the late Charley Lonzo and Setta Fay (Chapman) Berryhill. Upon the early death of her father, Ms. Berryhill provided the primary financial support for her mother and younger siblings for several years and at the age of fourteen went to work full-time as a battery filler at Brandon Mills in Greenville, SC. She continued in the textile industry as an adult and worked her way up to weaver. At various times she was employed by Poe Mill and Cone Mills in Greenville and at the Ellison Plant of Alice Manufacturing Co. in Easley. She retired from Central Textile, Inc. in Central, SC at age 65.
Raised on a farm, Ms. Berryhill continued to grow and can her own fruits and vegetables throughout her life. Not an avid traveler, she nonetheless crossed country by train in 1956 and was one of the first members of her family to fly in an airplane, an experience she chose never to repeat. She was a long-time member of Full Life Christian Fellowship Church of God in Easley.
She is survived by three of her siblings, George Thomas Berryhill of Travelers Rest, SC, Mary Helen Arnold of Sumter, SC, and Martha Masters of Easley; one brother-in-law, Milton Long of Greenville; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Berryhill of Travelers Rest, SC and Jane Seay of Easley; twenty nieces and nephews and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five of her siblings: Stella Long, Clara Fay Garner, John Berryhill, Carl Berryhill, and Lynda Stewart.
In her last year, Ms. Berryhill moved to Myrtle Beach, SC to be near her niece, Tina Hamby. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at Grand Strand Rehab & Nursing Center on July 27, 2018.
The family will receive friends at 10 am on Wednesday, August 1 at Robinson Funeral Homes-Downtown. A graveside funeral will follow at 11:30 am at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2410 Gentry Memorial Hwy, Pickens, SC. Rev. Matthew Bixby will conduct the service.
