Ruth Adams Johnston Barbee, 94, died on February 20, 2013 at Dillon Pointe Assisted Living in Spartanburg.
Born on August 25, 1918, in Peach County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Alonzo L. and Lillie Gassett Adams and was reared in the home of the late D.L. and Edna Jones following her mother's death in the influenza pandemic of 1918/19.
She was faithful to God, her family, friends and the many students she taught over the years. For many years she served as a pastor's wife in the Wesleyan Methodist/Wesleyan Church and held conference-wide office in the Women's Missionary Society. She was a graduate of Central Wesleyan College and Clemson University and was a retired school teacher, having taught in Greenville, Anderson, and Spartanburg counties.
She is survived by her daughter, Karla R. Johnston of Belton; two sons, Philip D. (Kathy) Johnston of Greer, and C. David (Barbara) Johnston of Forest, VA; four grandchildren, Jennifer J. (David) Dorn, Erin E. Johnston both of Greenville, Andrew Wesley (Jenny) Johnston of Savannah, and Matthew Karl (Beth) Johnston of Lynchburg, VA.; and a great-grandson, Zachary Dorn of Greenville.
She was predeceased by husbands Karl W. Johnston and L.W. Barbee as well as three siblings, Lillian Johnson, James Adams, and Elizabeth Bennett.
Graveside services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, February 23, at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley, with the Reverends William French and Ken Rice officiating.
A visitation will be 11:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Saturday, at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown prior to the service.
