Ruth Farrenkopf Hannegan Briggs of Clemson, SC died from complications of a stroke at the Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca, SC on July 3, 2011 surrounded by her family.
She was born August 20, 1921 in Boston, MA to Joseph and Marguerite Bonvie Farrenkopf. Ruth went to school in Watertown, MA and later established homes in Newton Centre, MA, Natick, MA, Camden, SC and Clemson, SC. As a young adult, she worked in accounting in Watertown, MA and later held various positions in retail sales in Wellesley, MA and Camden, SC. For many years Ruth was an active member at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Camden, SC and served on numerous Christian outreach committees. She developed an early love of flower gardening, excelled at needlework, held various positions in the SC Needlepoint Guild, enjoyed reading and projects involving handwork, and loved opportunities to travel throughout America and Europe.
For 26 years she was the devoted wife of Frederick A. "Fritz" Briggs of Clemson. Also, uth is survived by a daughter, Jean Hannegan Hill and husband, Hoke of Seneca; a son, Christopher Hannegan and wife, Sandra of Charleston, SC; stepsons Joseph Briggs of Columbia, SC, Frederick Briggs II and wife Jane of Bowie, MD, Kenneth Briggs and wife, Lisa of San Francisco, CA, and Donald Briggs and wife, Diane of Stafford, VA; grandchildren, Hoke Hill III, Brian Hill, Maria Hill and Alexander Hannegan; step-grandchildren Brian Briggs, Michael Briggs, Emily Briggs, Mary Briggs, Roger Briggs, Julia Briggs and Joan Briggs; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband of 27 years, Walter Gately Hannegan; her eldest son Thomas Edward Hannegan; her sister, Effie Farrenkopf Mosher; and her stepson, Stephen Briggs.
A Funeral Masss will be celebrated at 1 PM, Wednesday in the chapel of St. Andrew Catholic Church, Sloan Street, Clemson, SC with a reception to follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to OMC Foundation for Hospice, 298 Memorial Drive, Seneca, SC 29672 or to the charity of one's choice.
Burial will be in Quaker Cemetery, Meeting Street, Camden, SC at a later date.
