Sally Wickes Mathiasen

Sally Wickes Mathiasen, 85, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Speculator, New York, to Charles and Doris Wickes. Sally was married to Alfred Mathiasen, Jr. for 63 years and resided in Clemson for 49 of those years. She taught elementary school at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines, at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, and at Morrison Elementary School in Clemson. As avid fans of the Clemson Tigers, the Mathiasens opened their home to many Clemson athletes over the years and to the friends of their three children.

Sally was the mother of three Clemson graduates: Al Mathiasen III (Lisa) of Greenville, SC, Denise Mathiasen of Raleigh, NC, and Janis (Michael) George of Gotha, FL. She had six grandchildren: Katie (Eric) Shapiro of Raleigh, NC, Hanna George of Clemson, SC, Bruen George of Orlando, FL, Anders Mathiasen of Anderson, SC, Ellen George of Gotha, FL, Metthea Mathiasen of Clemson, SC, and one great grandson Dominic Shapiro of Raleigh, NC.

As a longtime member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clemson, Sally was a Member of the Altar Guild, the Pasqualies, and worked at the Christmas Bazaar each year. She also worked at St Paul’s Thrift Shop in Pendleton, serving as the Thrift Shop Treasurer. In the community, Sally was a member of PEO and the Military Wives Association.

Living in the Philippines while Al was in military service gave them a wonderful start to their love of adventure. As world travelers, Sally and Al loved seeing both the exotic and the familiar places on every continent except Antarctica.

The funeral for Sally Mathiasen will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clemson on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024 at 1:00pm. A reception to greet family and friends will follow the service in The Parish Hall. There will be a private burial at St. Paul’s Churchyard in Pendleton at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Foothills in Seneca who lovingly cared for Sally and her family in their time of need.
