Sam Spalding Swann, 72, of Normandy Shores, Seneca, SC, peacefully passed away Sunday, August 14, 2011, at Greenville Memorial Hospital, in Greenville, SC.

Sam was born September 22, 1938, to Dorothy Spalding Swann and Dr. Cecil Swann of Asheville, NC. Sam grew up in Asheville and later moved to Greenville then to Seneca, SC. Sam was a graduate of Christ School, Arden, NC, The University of the South, Sewanee, TN where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and did graduate work at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. He served in the US Army intelligence division based in Eritrea, Africa.

His passions were his family and sailing. He was a former member of Western Carolina Sailing Club. He was a founding member of Keowee Sailing Club where he held many offices, including Commodore and Race Committee Chair. He was also member of the Southeast Atlantic Yacht Racing Association.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen, of the home; daughter Elizabeth (Ron) Compton of Marietta, GA; son, Sam Jr. of Clemson, SC; his twin grandchildren, Ellie and Jackson Compton of Marietta, GA; stepdaughters Lindsay Badger of the home and Katherine (Barrett) Little of Charleston, SC; brothers David (Nancy) Swann of Asheville, NC and St. Barths; William Swann of Arden, NC; sister-in-law, Brenda Swann of Greensboro, NC; nephews Christopher (Kathy) Swann of Atlanta, GA; Andrew (Autumn) Swann of Atlanta, GA; Will (Danette) Swann of Franklinton, NC; and the Reverend Marie (Hayne) Cope of Munich, Germany; as well as several great nephews and niece. His former wife, Karen Z. Swann of Clemson, SC, also survives him.

A memorial service will be held at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, 108 Cross Creek Road, Central, SC, Saturday, August 20 at 2:00, with a reception at the Keowee Sailing Club, Rochester Highway (SC Highway 130) in Seneca, SC immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations in honor of his children to either the Arthritis Foundation, 1330 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA, 30309 or to the Blue Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America, 1 Park Plaza, Greenville, SC 29607.
