Sammie Lee "Sam" Stephens, 88, of Richard M. Campbell VA Nursing Home, Anderson, formerly of 202 Katherine Street, Easley, passed away Wednesday, January 07, 2015 at Richard M. Campbell VA Nursing Home.

Mr. Stephens was born in Easley on May 21, 1926, to the late Sam and Irene Craig Stephens. He was retired from Easley Combined Utilities with more than 30 years of service. Sam was an avid Ham Radio Operator (W4dzc). Sam was also an excellent navigator and private pilot and he enjoyed many flights from the Pickens County Airport with his friends.

Sam joined the US Navy just before Pearl Harbor, December 1941. He was only 15 years old and was assigned duty on the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier CV5. They were engaged in the Battle of the Coral Sea and then "The Famous Battle of Midway". They lost their ship as it was sunk by the enemy. He was later picked up by a Destroyer and taken to Pearl Harbor, then back to the Continental United States where he was discharged with medical conditions. Many years later, Sam served in the Easley National Guard.

Sam is survived by one brother, Kent Stephens; and two sisters, Nancy McElhannon and Dorothy Anderson, all of Easley. Sam also is survived by a special cousin, Tommie Rice, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Stephens was preceded in death by a brother; Furman A. "Mose" Stephens, and two sisters; Ellinor Donnald and Betty Ruth McGaha. Mr. Stephens was also preceded in death by a very special friend, Thelma Jones.

Graveside Services will be held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at Greenlawn Memorial Park conducted by the Rev. Dr. Alton Nix.

The Family will receive friends on Sunday, January 11, 2015 from 1:00 until 2:00 at Robinson Funeral Home ? Downtown.

The Family is at their respective homes.
