Sara Elizabeth "Betsy" Golden Skardon, 92, died January 23, 2019 at Clemson Downs Health Care Center, Clemson, SC. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Jasper Golden of Columbus, GA. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Poitevent Golden; her sister, Charlotte Golden Boyd; and her grandson, John Stephen Skardon.
Betsy is survived by her husband, Beverly N. "Ben" Skardon, Clemson, SC and by three daughters and one son: Sara Skardon Smith (Ravenel), Saluda, NC; Beverly Skardon Hardin, Walhalla, SC; Charlotte Skardon Raburn (Richard), Simpsonville, SC; and John Norton Skardon (Mariko), Seaside, CA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Clara Smith Sutcliffe, Ben Smith, Tom Hardin, James Hardin, Alvin Hardin, Caroline Raburn, Erin Skardon, and Jennifer Skardon, in addition to ten great grandchildren.
Betsy grew up in Columbus, GA where she became a volunteer for the Gray Ladies of the American Red Cross and a member of the Junior League in which she later became a sustaining member. Betsy met her husband, of 71 years, Ben at her Debutante Ball in Columbus.
Betsy attended Florida State University and graduated from Clemson University, Magna Cum Laude, in 1969. She entered the Clemson University Graduate School where she was a teaching assistant in the English Department. She was also inducted into Phi Kappa Phi.
Betsy was an ardent supporter and loyal member of Chi Omega sorority. She helped colonize the chapter at Clemson University.
Betsy served as a member of the Clemson Downs Health Care Volunteers.
Betsy was also a communicant of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. She served as a Sunday School teacher and taught French in the Day School. She was a member of the Alter Guild, the choir, and was the pianist for the Day School.
Betsy had many hobbies and interests including a love of music, a talented quilter, and a prolific reader. She was also an enthusiastic golfer who loved the game.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, January 28 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Clemson, SC with committal to follow at St, Paul's Episcopal Church, Pendleton, SC. Prior to the funeral, there will be a reception in the Parish Hall at Holy Trinity at 1:30 p.m.
