Seymour A. Porter

Seymour A. Porter, 85, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at Lila Doyle Nursing Center. He was born on July 24, 1923 in Hinton, OK to the late Seymour and Sylvia Porter.
He served in the Air Force as a mechanic gunner during WWII and was a disabled veteran, having obtained the rank of TSgt, and received four bronze oak leaf clusters, the EAME service ribbon, three bronze stars, and a Purple Heart. He retired in 1986 from the USDA Cotton Research Lab in Clemson. He was a member of the Clemson Masonic Lodge and also belonged to the Past Masters Club.
He and his wife, Helen, were married 63 years. They have been avid square dancers for over 28 years. After being declared legally blind, he could no longer dance, but continued to go with his wife to dance functions until his death. They are members of the Pacesetters in Anderson, and the Currahee Squares in Toccoa, GA.
He was a member of the Clemson United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Helen, of the home; son, Donald Porter and wife Joyce of Pendleton; daughter, Deana Bowden of Seneca; grandson, K. Christopher Bowden of Easley; and two sisters-in-law, JoElla Hamett of Oklahoma City, OK, and Mary Jaynes of Texarkana, TX. A brother, Russell Porter, predeceased him.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 12, 2009 from 7 PM until 8:30 PM at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central. Graveside services with Military Honors will be 11 AM Friday, February 13, 2009 at Oconee Memorial Gardens in Seneca. There will be a luncheon served at Clemson United Methodist Church following the services for all family and friends.
