Stanley Gosanko Nicholas, 93, husband of Louise Montgomery Nicholas, passed away Thursday, August 12, 2021 at Dominion Senior Living in Clemson.

Stan was born in Chicago, Illinois, a son of the late Nickolas and Anna Gosanko. Stan was a 1950 graduate of Northwestern University in mechanical engineering. In 1952 his world changed. He met and, after a whirlwind courtship, married Louise Montgomery. They have been inseparable for 68 years.

He began his career with Brown Citrus Machinery Corporation and later Continental Can Corporation. In 1962, Stan moved to Clemson and began a long career in research and development for Clemson University. He started as Associate Dean and Director of Engineering Research and later served as Vice President for Development. He retired as the Director of University Research. Stan was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and a past member of the vestry. He was a member and Past President of the Clemson Rotary Club, and was a US Army veteran.

Stan's passion was bird hunting, and opening day of dove season was always a special late summer family holiday. He loved his hunting dogs, and he enjoyed pursuing elusive coveys of quail across the upstate on quiet autumn afternoons. He was also known to rise hours before dawn to wait for passing wood ducks by still ponds on chilly winter mornings. When he wasn't hunting, he enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in the Blue Ridge mountains. On cool evenings, he often built an open fire in the stone fireplace. With the flames flickering, he would listen to family and friends for as long as anybody wanted to talk. He was a college football fan and enjoyed cheering for his alma mater, Northwestern and his beloved Clemson Tigers.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Louise, are his two sons, Stanley Montgomery Nicholas and wife, Kathleen of Cullowhee, NC and William David Nicholas and wife, Judi of Brevard, NC; grandchildren, Anna Liersaph and husband, Chris, Matthew Nicholas, Sarah Ory and husband, Jonathan, Katherine Mays and husband, Brian and Jason Nicholas; and great-grandchildren, John Henry Ory, Clara Ory and Ivan Liersaph.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, Saturday, August 21, 2021 in the Parish House of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

The Memorial Service will be at 1:00 PM, Saturday, August 21, 2021 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with Rev. Suz Cate officiating.
