T. J. "Joe" Shirley Jr. DVM, 79, formerly of 115 Scott Circle died peacefully, Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
Born in Oconee County, he was a son of the late Beulah Brooks and Thurston Joseph Shirley, Sr. Dr. Shirley was a veterinarian for over 48 years in Pendleton. He was a graduate of Clemson University and earned his DVM from the University of Georgia. He served as a volunteer with the Anderson Humane Society and the Clemson University Bull Test Station. He also helped establish the veterinary tech program at Tri County Tech. He was a member of the AVMA and First Baptist Church of Pendleton.
Surviving are his son, Thurston Joseph Shirley III (Wanda) of Anderson; his daughters, Dawn Compton (Chris) of Seneca, Jane Isbell (Randy) and Ann Mills (Keith) both of Pendleton; brother, John Shirley of Seneca; sister, Sallie Ruth Peebles of Greenwood; grandchildren, Josh Martin, Seth Martin, Holly Carithers, Jared Isbell, Jason Isbell, Heather Isbell, Brent Shirley and Justin Mills; great-grandchildren, Noah Martin, Austyn Hoover, Garrett Hoover, Bailey Carithers, Ava Skelton, Brayden Carithers, Easton Carithers and Dylan Coker; and the mother of his children, Sally Brown.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Sarah Jane Shirley, and grandchildren, Joseph Matthew Mills and Crystal Dawn Martin.
Funeral services will be 2 PM, Sunday, January 6, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Pendleton with Rev. Harry Girtman and Dr. Courtney Krueger officiating.
Burial will follow in Memory Gardens.
The family will recieve friends from 6 to 8 PM, Saturday at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central, SC.
The family will be at their respective homes.
