Thelma Townsend Tyndall, age 96, passed away peacefully at home September 21, 2017, surrounded by her loving family and devoted caregiver. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Elmer N. "Newt" Tyndall, her son John F. Hazzard, her parents Walter Pierson Townsend and Olive Johnson Townsend, and her brother Wallace P. Townsend. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Franklin William Hazzard. She is survived by her five daughters, Barbara Tyndall Seltmann (James) of Hickory, NC; Sandra Tyndall Davis (Michael) of Atlanta, GA; Nancy Johnson Tyndall of Memphis, TN;
Susan Tyndall Strnad of Aptos, CA; and Patricia Tyndall Owings (Marvin) of Hendersonville, NC; daughter-in- law Carolyn Cheryl Hazzard of Redmond, WA; nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
She was born at 114 South Bedford Street in Georgetown DE on May 8, 1921. She graduated from Georgetown High School and the University of Delaware, where she received her degree in Elementary Education. After the death of her first husband, she returned to Georgetown and began her teaching
career. In 1961, she married Newt Tyndall, and began her career as an Air Force wife. Newt and Thelma lived in Clemson, SC for 40 years before returning to Georgetown and reestablishing residency and membership in Wesley United Methodist Church. Her family including children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren will always fondly remember the wonderful annual family reunion trips that she and Newt made possible.
Visitation will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church on Saturday September 30 at 2:00 pm followed by a Memorial Service at 3:00. A private burial will be held at the family cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delaware Hospice at 100 Patriot Way, Milford, DE 19963 or Wesley
United Methodist Church at 102 East Laurel St, Georgetown, DE 19947. Arrangements are being handled by Short Funeral Services, Georgetown DE.
