Thomas Ernest (Tom) Wooten, 77, of Clemson, died at home surrounded by his family on January 15, 2015. He was born on July 5, 1937 in Southern Pines, NC to Talmage and Ruth Wooten and grew up in Hamlet, NC. Following three years in the United States Army, he graduated from Catawba College with a Bachelors of Arts degree, Duke University with a Masters in Forestry, and North Carolina State University with a Ph.D. in Forestry. After a brief stint as a researcher at Mississippi State University, he taught Forestry at Clemson University for 37 years, where he achieved the rank of Alumni Distinguished Professor and served as department chair. Tom was recognized for excellence in teaching through multiple awards and was honored to serve as chair of the Alumni Professors and as University Marshal from December 1997 through May 1998. Following his retirement, Tom continued to teach at Clemson as an adjunct member of the faculty. Tom was an active member of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, where he acted as Sunday School Superintendent for over 25 years and a member of the Board of Deacons.
He is survived by Helen McMillan Wooten, his wife of 39 years, his three children Marian Hinnant Wooten (Sudheer Bayanker), Eugenia Wooten Iredale (Brent), and Raymond Talmage Wooten, and two grandchildren, William Thomas Iredale and John McMillan Iredale

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
