Thullin “Gene” Eugene Sanders Jr., 71, of Six Mile, passed away on February 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of the family he cherished so deeply. Born in Miami-Dade County to Thullin Eugene Sanders Sr. and Nancy Schofill Sanders, Gene lived a life marked by faith, dedication, and a genuine love for people.
From an early age, Gene had both a sharp mind and a generous heart. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Florida, he’s used this to work in his career as a nuclear engineer at Duke Energy for 48 plus years. This is a reflection of his strong work ethic and determination. But while he was accomplished academically, those who knew Gene best would tell you his greatest strengths were never measured in degrees — they were found in his character.
Gene never met a stranger. He had an easy smile, a welcoming spirit, and a natural ability to make others feel at home. If someone needed help, Gene was already on the way. Whether it was offering advice, lending a hand, or simply listening, he gave freely of himself.
He had a lifelong passion for cars and could often be found talking engines, horsepower, or the latest project with enthusiasm. Saturdays in the fall were reserved for cheering on his beloved Florida Gators, celebrating victories with the same joy he brought to everyday life. One of his greatest joys was coaching baseball, where he not only taught the fundamentals of the game but also instilled confidence, discipline, and teamwork in the young players he mentored.
At home, Gene found peace working in his yard, carefully tending to the spaces where his family gathered and made memories. Those quiet moments outdoors reflected the steady, thoughtful man he was.
Of all his accomplishments, Gene was most proud of his family. His love for his wife, children, and grandchildren was unwavering and evident in everything he did. He was their steady foundation, biggest supporter, and guiding example. His role as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather was the title he treasured most.
Gene’s faith was central to his life. As a deacon at Kings Grove Baptist Church, he served faithfully and humbly, always pointing others toward kindness, service, and community. His church family was dear to him, and his impact there will not be forgotten.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Sanders; his sons, Timothy Eugene Sanders (Leah), Daniel Shane Sanders (Sarah), and Cameron Keith Sanders; his mother and father, Gene and Nancy Sanders; his brother, Mike Sanders (Cathy); his sisters, Nancy Kitchens and Betsy Sanders; and his cherished grandchildren, Stetson Sanders, Theo Sanders, and Hudson Sanders. Each of them carries forward his legacy of strength, generosity, and love.
Though Gene’s presence will be deeply missed, the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely will live on in all who knew him.
