Timothy James Sartain was healed and embraced in heaven as he passed from this life to eternity on November 5, 2023, at the age of 40. Based on his testimony he was redeemed by Christ’s blood, mercy and grace.
An optimist and fighter, Tim faced numerous challenges with hope and effort. Born deaf on March 24, 1983, in Beaufort, South Carolina, he began learning American Sign Language (ASL) and oral English from a young age. He also became quite proficient at reading lips to communicate. His education included total communication classes in Beaufort, SC; oral classes at Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Missouri; and mainstream classes with an interpreter in Anderson County, SC. He earned a diploma at Pendleton High School and learned various trades through hands-on instruction in the fields of automotive and construction during his adulthood.
He enjoyed meeting new people and learning new things. His natural talent for art was utilized in many of his hobbies which included sketching, painting, building model cars, creative lettering, pinstriping, and creating tattoo designs. He also loved being active and the camaraderie of team sports including football, basketball, wrestling, mixed martial arts, and arm wrestling. Arm wrestling was his favorite and he enjoyed practicing and traveling to competitions with his team members until he became sick.
Tim is survived by his wife, Brooke Gibbs Sartain; his parents, Dennis and Arleatha Sartain; his sister, Christy Page (Ben); his brother, Nathan Sartain (Elizabeth); a niece and a nephew; his father-in-law, Tom Gibbs; his brother-in-law, Brett Gibbs (Kayla); aunts, uncles, cousins, foster siblings, and friends.
Two special women who made a big difference in his life are his foster mom, Janelle Barker, who took him home from the hospital, nurtured, cared and advocated for him when he was young and his aunt, Donna Brazeal, who provided advice, protection, support, and close friendship during his adult years.
Visitation to remember Tim will be from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm on Saturday, November 11, 2023, followed by a memorial service at 2pm to honor his life, which will be interpreted in ASL. The location will be Robinson’s Funeral Home at 1425 Powdersville Rd. Easley, SC 29642.
