"Tippy" Welborn Cope

Tippy Welborn Cope, aka Annice Welborn Cope, 71, of 120 Briarcliff Road died, Monday, May 27, 2013 at her home after succumbing to Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). She was born in Florida, the daughter of the late John Duckworth Welborn, Jr. and Anna Mae Panabaker Welborn of Pendleton, SC. She graduated from Pendleton High School, class of 1960, and attended Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing from 1960-62, before graduating from Anderson Hospital School of Nursing in 1965. She worked as an RN in Forida and South Carolina. She also graduated from Spartanburg General Hospital/University of SC Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate program in 1976. Tippy practiced as a certified Nurse Practitioner at Clemson University's Redfern Health Center, Clemson, SC from 1978 until her retirement in 2006. From 1999-2004 she also attended Greenville Technical College, Greenville, SC and graduated with an AD in Computer Technology.
Tippy accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in Jacksonville, Fl and she and George regularly attended and were members of the First Baptist Church of Pendleton.
Tippy married the love of her life, E. George Cope, Jr. in 1962 and they lived in Clemson, SC and part time in Edisto Beach, SC, where they enjoyed 50 + years of love and laughter with him and their two children, Virginia (Jenny) Cope Stapleton (Greg) of Dyersburg, TN and G. Christian (Chris) Cope (Christy) of Lyons, CO; and five wonderful grandchildren, Bradley, Sean and Aaron Stapleton and Halina and Olivia Cope.
Tippy is also survived by her sister, Mary W. Raymond (Bud) of E. Wenatchee, WA; nephew and nieces, Karen, Dan and Susan Phipps; her Mother's sweet, supportive first cousin, Beverly Richardson Haden of Dallas, TX; and her many good friends in Clemson and Edisto beach.
In addition to her parents, she was preceeded in death by her sister, Joan W. Gudenkauf.
In retirement she and George volunteered with The Edisto Beach Loggerhead Turtle Project from 2007-2012. She was indebted to Merelyn Devers of Edisto Beach, SC for all she and George learned and practiced as section workers and co-leaders with the Loggerhead turtles.
The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1:15 PM, Friday, May 31, 2013 at The First Baptist Church of Pendleton prior to the service which will be held at 1:30 PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
