Dr. Tom J. Collins of Americus, GA, formerly of Pickens, SC died on Sunday, December 10, 2023. He was born in Six Mile, SC to parents Edna and Joseph Eugene Collins on December 21, 1940. Both parents predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dr. Emily Anna Callaham Collins.
Tom graduated from Pickens High School, Clemson University, and the University of Southern Mississippi, earning a Ph.D. in Education Administration. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1965-1967. For most of his life he was an educator, serving as a teacher and elementary school principal. Tom was always a lifelong learner. He was known as being kind always and to everyone. He was also known for sincerely caring about others, especially the students in his classes and in his school. Tom loved laughter and bringing others laughter and happiness. He loved bringing joy to all those around him. The world needs more of those like Tom Collins.
Funeral services were Thursday, December 14 in Americus, GA at First Presbyterian Church. Committal services will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Pickens Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. followed by burial at Hillcrest Cemetery in Pickens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Americus Presbyterian Church (Reverend Sommer Bower), 125 South Jackson St., Americus, GA 31709 or to Dooly County Retired Educators for the establishment of a scholarship in his name for a teacher: Dr. Pam Fields, 304 Sun Valley Dr., Americus GA 31709.
