Dr. Vernon Lee Robinson, 80, formerly of Clinton, IA, died March 15, 2010 at his home, 2557 Sugar Valley Road, Seneca, SC 29672. A service celebrating his life will be held Friday at 1pm at the University Lutheran Church in Clemson, S.C. Entombment will follow at Oconee Memorial Park in Seneca. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Thursday at the Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central-Clemson Commons.
Dr. Robinson was born August 18, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, IA, the son of the late Ray G. and Margaret Elsie (Anderson) Robinson. Survivors include his wife Barbara, son Michael and daughter-in-law Sally Credick of Watkinsville, GA, son Mark and daughter-in-law, Kristie Drury of Covington, GA, daughter Verlynn of Roswell, GA, two sisters Marguerite Johnson of LeClaire, IA and Sally Greve of Minneapolis, MN and four grandchildren, Matthew Dale and Avery Brian Robinson of Watkinsville, GA and Jared Scott and Justin Ryan Robinson of Lawrenceville, GA.
Dr. Robinson attended Lyons, IA schools in Clinton, IA and graduated in 1948. He played football, basketball and track for Lyons High School and lettered in all three sports. He received his B.S. in 1956 and his M.S. in 1958 both from Iowa State University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in 1972. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi National Scholastic Society. He was a forest scientist with the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station, U.S. Forest Service for 30 years. He has authored or coauthored 50 publications and has made 28 presentations at regional and national meetings. After retiring from the Forest Service, Dr. Robinson became an Associate Professor of Forestry at Clemson University. He served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Appalachian Society of American Foresters for 15 years. He was elected a Fellow in the Society of American Foresters in 1999. He served as Secretary/Treasurer of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Athens, GA for 18 years and was a Boy Scout Leader for 6 years. He was the founding chairman of the East Georgia Chapter of American Red Cross. He was an Instructor Trainer in both First Aid and CPR for the American Red Cross. He helped build 8 Habitat for Humanity Homes. Dr. Robinson served 4 years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He married Barbara Jeanne Junge of Clinton, IA on July 7, 1951. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on July 7, 2001.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Ray, Robert and Freddie Robinson and a sister Mary Thomson.
