Vincent D. R. Guide, 82, of 100 Cardinal Drive, died Monday, November 16, 2009 at National Health Care-Mauldin.
He retired as a lieutenant colonel after 24 years in the Army, having served during the Korean War and as a Special Forces officer during the Vietnam War. One of his earliest assignments was to serve as a guard at the Nuremberg Trials. Upon retiring from the Army in 1970, he worked as a comptroller for Riegel Textiles in Ware Shoals, S.C., then returned to Clemson and taught accounting and finance for over 20 years at Clemson University, winning awards for his teaching.
Having converted to the Baptist faith when he married, he was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Clemson, serving as a Sunday School teacher, church treasurer and assistant treasurer, and enthusiastic member of the Monday Morning Men's Prayer Group. Late in life, he returned to his childhood church, affiliating himself with St. Andrews Catholic Church in Clemson.
Surviving are a son, Dan Guide and wife, Michele Planchon-Guide of State College, Pa.; a daughter, Christine Montgomery and husband, Jeff of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Alexander Guide of Pittsburgh, Pa.; grandchildren, Andrew, Ryan and Anthony Guide and Rob and Will Montgomery.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in 2008 by his beloved wife, Geraldine Young Guide.
A graveside committal service will be 1 p.m., Monday in Woodland Cemetery on the campus of Clemson University.
The family will receive visitors at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central, SC on Sunday night, November 22, from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
Funeral guests are invited to join the family after the service at the Blue Herron restaurant on College Ave,Clemson,SC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Salvation Army, the American Lung Association, or Habitat for Humanity.
