Virginia Ellison Cely, 93, of Easley, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Laurens County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Anderson County, Mrs. Cely was a daughter of the late Gwin Childress and Corine Cely Ellison. She was a member of Easley First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Philathea Sunday School Class, the Theresa Anderson and Pam Smith Circle of the Women's Missionary Union. For years, she volunteered at Baptist Easley Hospital and was very active in the community. She was an officer of three clubs and organizations, and was a member of the Greenville Women's Club.
Mrs. Cely lived on Muirfield Dr. for many years before moving to the Willows of Easley, where she enjoyed an active life. She recently moved to Martha Franks in Laurens, SC, to be near her daughter.
Surviving are a daughter, Ellison Carriker Jones and her husband Edmund L. Jones, Jr. of Greenwood; a sister-in-law, Marion Tucker of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cely was predeceased by two husbands, Paul Carriker in 1970 and Brooks C. Cely in 1996; a brother G. Brooks Ellison; and two sisters, Hazel E. McCoy and Emily Ruth E. Anderson.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, May 10, 2014 in the Sanctuary of Easley First Baptist Church, with the Reverend Dr. John Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery, Powdersville. Mrs. Cely's nephews will serve as active pallbearers. The Philathea is asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends in the Narthex of the church from 11:30 A.M. until 12:45 P.M. Saturday, prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mrs. Cely's honor to the Easley First Baptist Church Building Fund, 300 E. First Avenue, Easley, SC 29640, or to a charity of one's choice.
