Virginia D. Norwood

Virginia Durham Norwood of Central, SC, widow of William Wright “Bill” Norwood passed away peacefully on September 6, 2022, at the Cottingham Hospice House. She was 96 years old.

Born in Pickens, SC she was the daughter of the late John L. and Malissie Brezeale Durham. A gifted musician, Virginia taught piano for many years. She spent almost 70 years in service to the church as organist and choir director/choir member, 50 of those years at Mount Zion United Methodist Church. She was also actively involved in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Women serving in various roles. She especially enjoyed filling and distributing Shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. For many years she worked at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central and spoke often of how much she enjoyed that time and the people she interacted with there. While music was her passion, she also enjoyed traveling, reading, calligraphy, and visiting with family and friends. Strong in faith, she read the entire bible at least twice.

Surviving are her son, William W. Norwood, Jr. (Vera) of West Columbia, SC, and daughter, Connis Norwood (Kathy O’Brien) of Salem, SC. Virginia was predeceased by her five brothers (Fletch, T.J., Carl, Cliff, and Fred Durham) and her two sisters (Edna Clement and Essie Lewis.)

There will be a graveside service at 10:30 Thursday morning followed by a celebration of life at Mt. Zion UMC at 11AM. The family will greet friends afterward. The Celebration of Life will be live streamed through the Mt. Zion UMC Facebook page.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 186, Central, SC 29630, or to a charity of choice.
