Vivian Dukes Hurt, 92, of 413 North B Street, wife of the late Alvin Judson "Jud" Hurt, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014 at her home.
Born on January 2, 1922, in Greenwood, South Carolina, Mrs. Hurt was the daughter of the late Fannie Mae Timmerman and Bailey Augustus Dukes. She was brought up in Laurens, South Carolina where she graduated from Laurens High School. She graduated from Presbyterian College with a B.A. in French and English and was the first female to serve as Student Body President. Mrs. Hurt taught French, English, and Latin for several years in the Pickens County School System.
Mrs. Hurt was a member of Easley First Baptist Church, where she had been active for over fifty years. She served in many roles at the church including being a former Chairman of the Flower Committee and working with the needlepoint and prayer room ministry. She was also one of the first females to serve as a deacon.
Her civic activities included being a member of the Easley Garden Club, Better Homes Club, and several bridge clubs. She also worked with the Children's Trust Fund of South Carolina, the Camp of the Blind, and she enjoyed her volunteer work at the hospital. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends.
Surviving are two sons, Alvin (Al) Judson Hurt, Jr., and his wife, Sandi, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and William Bailey Hurt and his wife, Beth Manzi, of Raleigh, North Carolina; a daughter, Lucy Hurt Beard, and her husband, Carey, of Easley; six grandchildren, Bailey Judson Beard, Carey Hall Beard and his wife, Koehler, Alvin Judson Hurt, III, Elizabeth Brooke Hurt, Ann Dukes Hurt, and Morgan Katia Hurt; and one great-granddaughter, Emily Augustus Beard.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Monday at First Baptist Church, Easley, with the Rev. Dr. John Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends in the church narthex Monday from 1:00 PM until 2:45PM prior to the service. The family will also receive friends at the home, 413 North B Street, Easley following the Committal Service.
