Willis Ramsey Clayton, 81, of 400 Church Street, died Monday, July 18, 2011 at his home.
Born in Central, he was a son of the late Paul C. and Rachael Ramsey Clayton. He was a graduate of Central High School and attended University of Georgia on a football scholarship. Ramsey was a retired construction worker, bar owner, grocery store owner and member of Mt. Zion UMC. He was a US Marine Corps Veteran and proud member of the VFW and American Legion. Ramsey was an active member of a 12 step recovery program, an avid bird hunter and enjoyed football, baseball and basketball.
Surviving are a son, Richard Paul Clayton and wife, Lynne of Liberty, SC; three daughters Jane McClain and Penney Gillespie both of Florida and Rebecca (Becki) Stehno of Omaha, Nebraska; brother, William (Bill) Thomas Clayton of Central; grandchildren, Paul Clayton, John Clayton, David Clayton and Kathryn Clayton; a niece, Susan Clayton Davis; and a great-niece, Elizabeth Davis.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Bertha Hembree Clayton.
Funeral services will be 11 AM, Friday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Kurt McPherson officiating.
Burial will follow in Sharon UMC Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM, Thursday at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mt. Zion UMC, P.O. Box 186, Central, SC 29630, Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621 or to the charity or organization of one's choice.
